Marcus Brinkmann

Marcus was born in Dortmund, Germany, in 1975. Dortmund is a town located in the north west of Germany, and part of the Ruhr area, a congested area changing quickly from industry to services as the economical basis. This area is where he grew up and went to school, and where he is now enrolled at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, studying mathematics and physics.

When Marcus was seven years old, he learned about computers, how they work and how they can be controlled. Programming became a hobby. But it was not until the Internet replaced the German Btx system that he became part of the world-wide community of free software developers. This step was essential, not only because it enabled him to retrieve and study large amounts of real world source code under a free sotfware license, but also because it made it possible to communicate and cooperate with the programmers of the software.

Starting out as a user of GNU/Linux systems, Marcus joined the Debian project in 1997 and participated in creating their GNU/Linux distribution. In 1998 he learned about the GNU Hurd, and started to work on a binary distribution of the GNU system. Since then, he joined the GNU project and now works on several of its software packages, mainly on the GNU Hurd.
