Standards to Revolutionise OS Systems

One of the challenges of software programmers is how to keep IT systems responsive to new demands without having to start anew. While system evolution is usually possible, sometimes more radical, revolutionary changes are necessary. Such changes require system flexibility, an issue that has to be addressed before the system becomes too complex to handle. Perhaps somewhat counter-intuitively, Egyedi will try to argue that in many cases standards can create system flexibility. Her line of argument addresses the pitfalls of OSS variants, 'interoperability' and 'coordination'. She holds that the types of coordination dominant in OSS development do not suffice. In the future, the coordinative role of standards will become more important, in particular, where complex OS systems need to undergo revolutionary changes.
