Klaus Birkenbihl (*1948 in Koblenz) studied at the University of Bonn and finished his diploma thesis on "Abstract machines for LISP" in 1972.

He joined the Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung (GMD) in 1970 and was involved in research on software technology from 1970-1975, when he moved to GMD's computer center Bonn. He was manager of this Computing Center (1980-1990) head of the the department of Network engineering (1989-1997) and the deputy director of GMD Institute for Media Communication (IMK) (1997-2001). Since 1997, he is in charge of the Competence Center "Networks and Society" in IMK.

Birkenbihl lectured on Computer Science at the University of Cologne (1983-1989) and on Hypermedia Systems at the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (2003).

His networking related work includes

- Founding member and later Deputy Director Germany of the European Academic Research Network ( EARN, 1983-1990)
- Member of the operational committee of the German Research Network (DFN, 1984-1990)
- Member of the steering committee and technical manager of the European Academic Supercomputer Initiative Network [EASInet] (1989-1993)
- Member of "DIN Kommision Informationsgesellschaft" (1997-2001)
- Chairman and later Treasurer of the German Chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC.DE, 1998-)
- Manager of the German (and later German&Austrian) Office of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C, 1998-)

Since 1994, Birkenbihl is the bandleader of the Nero's Delight rock band.
